Job Summary

The Student Resident Assistant (RA) is a student leader within Housing and Residence Life at Florida Gulf Coast University. RAs serve as role models and are responsible for supporting residents, building community, and upholding university policies and standards.

Job Description

Typical duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Serve as a positive role model and representative of Housing & Residence Life and the University at all times.
  • Support the mission, vision, and residential curriculum of Housing & Residence Life.
  • Build community within the assigned residence hall, floor, or area through intentional engagement, programming, and resident connections.
  • Enforce and educate residents on University policies, the Community Guidebook, and the Student Code of Conduct.
  • Respond to incidents and emergencies while serving in an on-call rotation, maintaining required response times and following established procedures.
  • Attend and actively participate in required trainings, weekly staff meetings, one-on-one meetings, and major departmental or university events.
  • Complete administrative tasks including reports, room checks, health and safety inspections, maintenance requests, and desk shifts (minimum 20 hours per week of RA responsibilities).
  • Maintain regular communication with supervisors and collaborate effectively with staff and campus partners.
  • Maintain good academic and conduct standing, including a minimum 2.50 semester and cumulative GPA and required enrollment status.
  • Prioritize the RA role above other non-academic commitments and comply with outside employment and involvement guidelines.

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in at least one course at FGCU.
  • Must have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least a 2.0.
  • Must be in and maintain good conduct standing with the university.
  • Must be able to work a minimum of three (3) shifts a week (9 hours total).  

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to excellence.
  • Familiar with basic computer software (Word, Excel, Google Docs, etc.).
  • Understands the importance of managing multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Ability to keep tasks and materials organized.
  • Ability to identify issues and find solutions. 
  • Have knowledge of FGCU and Housing policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work weekends and nights.
