Job Summary

The Handler II is a member of a team that supports the daily operations of the mail room and/or shipping and receiving. Tasks include receiving, processing, sorting, and delivery of interoffice mail, United States Postal Service (USPS), UPS, FedEx, or common carrier deliveries.

Job Description

Typical duties include but are not limited to:

  • Receives, sorts, and processes, and delivers incoming mail, packages, and deliveries.
  • Assists with special offsite delivery runs as needed to support service operations.
  • Picks-up and prepares outgoing deliveries, returns, packages, and mail.
  • Records incoming deliveries and mail. Tags incoming capital assets as required.
  • Records outgoing deliveries and mail, including postage and shipping charges for monthly departmental charge backs.
  • Completes special mailing projects for the university such as bulk mailings.
  • Assists with locating items from warehouse storage.
  • Performs routine maintenance and control of all equipment.
  • Maintains workspace and vehicles in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Serves as essential personnel and provides assistance in the event of an emergency on campus.
  • Assists with maintaining an accurate list of supply or storage inventory.
  • Assists with research and communication related to missing or damaged deliveries and shipments.
  • Maintains and updates the campus delivery directory.

Other Duties:

  • Provides backup support during supervisor absences, assisting with routes and billing procedures as needed. Provides support to other areas within the Physical Plant as necessary which includes, but is not limited to recycling collection, campus cleanup, or inventory of surplus property.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:

  • This position requires a high school diploma and three years of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.
  • Recent experience operating a personal computer and proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Workday).
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in mailroom, mail delivery, or shipping and receiving operations.
  • Experience in mailroom, mail delivery, or shipping and receiving operations in a higher education setting.
  • Experience operating a personal computer and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Workday).

  • Proven ability to think strategically and approach challenges with creativity.
  • Demonstrated track record of reliability, meeting goals, and holding oneself accountable.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience working effectively across teams.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) applications.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn postal machinery and package tracking equipment.
  • Knowledge of inventory control principles and methods.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to prioritize and complete simultaneous projects with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to safely maneuver a service vehicle to load and offload deliveries into and out of buildings.
  • Ability to accurately prepare and maintain records, files, and reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with university faculty, staff, students, outside vendors, and the general public.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing situations and environments.
  • Ability to work successfully as both a member of a team and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet close deadlines due to time sensitive mail.
  • Ability to think critically and creatively, have a high standard of integrity, and be motivated to incorporate best practices into the organizational structure.
  • Ability to interpret and apply laws, regulations, policies and procedures consistently.

Salary Range: $19.00 to $22.00
